What off season? Andy, I really enjoy seeing the BWCA on foot, it’s a different experience from canoeing, but you still get to enjoy the classic BWCA campsites. The Border Route Trail is a 65-mile long hiking trail that crosses the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW) in the far northeast corner of Minnesota (Arrowhead) and follows the international border between Minnesota and Ontario, Canada. I did a lot of canoe tripping up in Maine as a teenager, so I have a pretty good handle on how to maneuver a canoe and contend with high winds and waves. The 1999 blow down, followed by the 2007 Pagami Creek Wildfire threatened to erase this historic trail from the wilderness. For those wishing to begin at the eastern end, follow Otter Lake Road, just north of Hovland. Even then, getting lost is easy.

The Border Route Trail Guide contains detailed topographic maps along with information about camp sites, side trips, scenery, and natural features. The BWCA runs along Minnesota’s border with Ontario, Canada, and is contiguous with Quetico Provincial Park, which has nearly 1.2 million acres and over 600 lakes of its own. They do, however, give an idea of the trail's location and proximity to area lakes. I spent 7 months in the BWCA (and Quetico) as an Outward Bound canoe expedition instructor. The hiking trails of the Boundary Waters are NOT like your typical state park trail or even the Superior Hiking Trail. At times the trail simply disappears. Some of the “moose muck” swamps would make for a very interesting backpacking trip. Be prepared to get frustrated, maybe even scared. Cars are generally safe when parked, but break-ins do occur at some popular trailheads in the summer.
