I’d watch out for ticks along the border swath as it’s overgrown. The edge of the lake is surrounded by a well-developed floating bog mat of mosses, sedges, grasses, leather leaf, the uncommon buckbean, and a large concentration of insectivorous plants, such as pitcher plant and sundew. The first half mile is steep, rocky, and wet in sections before it turns left and drops down to the shore of the Lake.
The drive there passes through miles of wilderness, so keep an eye out for moose, fox and deer on the way up. As we walked toward the trailhead, my kids gazed toward the Canadian side, excited to be looking at a foreign country. Great hike, a little tough for our 10yr granddaughter, she found it interesting that we went in & out of Canada. before and after our hike.
Though shallow (it has a maximum depth of 5 feet) the pond does not completely freeze in winter and supports a small year-round fish population, river otter, and beaver. we stopped 2 minutes earlier and sat on some downed trees instead...d'oh!
Some parts around the lake really give you that complete seclusion feeling.
Taller people will have to duck under it. The final destination is well worth the hike up. Overgrown in the beginning, but it does clear up. The Conservancy’s management goals are simply to preserve the natural character of the land and to provide for passive recreation, nature study and education. On the flip side, most of the trail is overgrown and a lot of prickly plants to scratch you. Going up the mountain is challenging with the steep rocks and moisture.

Park on the right before the border crossing the trail starts on the left beyond the customs building. I highly recommend this trail ... Just be careful of the rocks and moisture.

The border markers throughout are kind of cool to think that you are straddling the 2 countries.

So when I got a chance to visit Pittsburg with my two kids last summer, we made it our mission to seek out Fourth Connecticut Lake, the source of the Connecticut River. The lake itself resembles a small bog, but it is more accurately a northern acidic mountain tarn — a small glacial pond. the lake at the top is nice and has some beaver sign. Great hike. The Connecticut River impacts four states — New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts and Connecticut — and feeds a series of large, cold-water lakes. Fourth Connecticut Lake is a lake in New Hampshire and has an elevation of 2667 feet.

Wish the ‘No Dogs Allowed’ had been more prominently mentioned, but, not a total loss, turned around and hiked the South Cohos Trail at the 2nd Connecticut.
if you are planning a lunch up top, go to the left for the loop around the lake.
Definitely a bit more advanced than others, but doable if you take your time.
Having long been the target of preservation by several environmental groups, this gift was meaningful and symbolic to the campaign to protect the best of the Connecticut River.
